Nostalgic of baby days

When I look at my four year-old son in his skinny jeans, plaid shirt and oversized sunglasses, I immediately reach for memories of his baby days in the corner of my mind.

When my daughter announced her first “real” crush, I nearly ran out of breath. No worries. I managed to keep my cool and listened to her recounting the flushed cheeks and racing heart beat with sincere interest. Even though I was screaming, “no! no! it’s too early! You’re only 9!” in my head, I offered my most objective mom-advice: “Be yourself and know that your nervousness is part of a very natural reaction.”

I often question myself if I’m doing the right thing or making the right decision for my children. But one thing I’m know for certain is that this closeness to my children has something to do with babywearing and co-sleeping.

My son, however of a “big boy” he sees himself, still rubs my arms and shoulder much like the way he used to as a baby on my back. Ms. Independent Tween still finds comfort in cuddling up to a movie on my bed. Sure they have their own beds now and they are too big to be worn on my back; but they seek physical closeness to me as a source of comfort. It’s deeply gratifying and humbling to know my children still need me. I hold my breath each day, hoping and praying I will always remain in their lives.

Two weeks ago, I was persistent enough that my cousin let me wear her 5 month-old son on my back at the kids museum. In a brand new Beco Gemini, I felt at euphoric and at peace the two hours her baby was fast asleep on my back. The long panting pattern was calming. I mean, how can anyone not smile? He was contently snuggled up against me, mouth wide open. Baby snores. It’s the kind of a nap that has become an elusive dream to us grown-ups.

I am considering volunteering at popular family outings to wear babies, big and small. One less cranky baby strapped down to a bucket on wheels. It’d be public service if only it wouldn’t seem so strange to … well, strangers …

Vaccine debate from Frontline

I know this will be a controversial issue amongst us parents. But please watch the entire episode with an open mind and take note of arguments presented objectively.
For me, there are still many unanswered questions for me. At the very least, the preliminary ones are:
1) Does the decline of breastfed babies promote the vulnerability of infant contracting diseases prior to his or her scheduled shots, thereby accounting for the chances of contracting fatal diseases?
2) If vaccines are doing a great job, how can minority group of unvaccinated children be responsible for causing an epidemic?
3) If MMR or ingredients in vaccines do not support correlations of vaccinations to autism, what other theories may be considered to dispel any “myth” of its link to this rising epidemic? This last, but not least, question struck me with profound curiosity. How does a brain disorder surface at the same time number of vaccines increased on the inoculation schedule recommended by CDC?

What was not addressed in this Frontline piece is a very political question: what’s the pharmaceutical industry’s responsibility and its role in the promotion of the increasing number of vaccines children are receiving today?How do we, the public, know with certainty that a giant profit-based industry create medicine with utmost intention to safeguard us against diseases rather than pushing products for profit?

A very important NOTE: I don’t consider this Frontline piece to be the product of journalism. I appreciate interviews with both sides of the argument. It is, however, done with bias to favor one argument over another simply by its way editing responses from certain interviewees with a slant.

Invaluable benefits of a planner

I am used to doing things in my head, fly by the moment and don’t give it a second thought. It’s just a habit of mine to wing it. But it doesn’t work as a busy mom of two working in and out of the home.

I finally resorted to using a planner. No. I don’t have an iPhone or a crack berry. I have one of those old school planners purchased from Target in the Back to School section. But so far, it has worked out for me. Every night before bed, I jot down what I need to accomplish the next day. On the weekend, I try to plan out dinner for the week. Although I may not necessarily stick to every meal I’ve planned, it’s still a good blue print. I shop wiser and faster this way. On the other hand, I do not beat myself up if I don’t check off an errand. I’ll schedule it for the next day.

The challenge is that this way of life is quite new to me. I wasn’t raised with a routine or much discipline when it comes to organization. So it is a constant reminder to myself that I need to pull out my planner from my mommy purse and see if I’ve missed anything for the day. But it has proved helpful more than once! For instance, I nearly missed my daughter’s piano lesson (even though she’s been taking lessons on the SAME day and SAME time for the past 8 months) and a doctor’s appointment had I not perused my trusty little planner. So there you have it!

If you’re thinking about becoming a momtreneuer, I’d say the a calendar planner whether it’d be on your phone or on paper can streamline your life. The seasoned WAHM already know this. It’s the only way to get things done and not lose your insanity, if you ask me.
